Understand ayuvedic treatments and enjoy its splendour at Nira Spa of Shanti Maurice Resort and Spa in Mauritius

Shanti Maurice, Nira Spa, Ayurvedic Massage

Going through an ayuvedic experience is a return to the joys of youth and vitality. In stead of looking for a single feeling of relaxation like we usually do in a general spa, ayuvedic treatments are made to give you a real achievement of healing to the body, mind and the spirit, preventing future diseases, so guiding you to a natural way of being. “Ayuvedic Spa” or “Ayuvedic Treatments” are more and more trendy today in the world of spa.

Originated in India 5000 years ago, Ayurveda is a combination of philosophy and medicine and can be translated as “science of life”. Despite it is base on simple and modern belief in the balance of natural elements which is beneficial for all living creatures, Ayuveda continues to be difficult to understand for the occidental mind. Ayuveda is a science because it is a whole system which is composed equally of philosophy and medicine, which means seeking wellness, longevity and healing practices for the body and the spirit. In Ayurveda three principal energies join together to create life in the universe. These energies constitute what is the most important for living creatures because they represent the three processes of growth, maintenance and decay.

In fact, ayuvedic treatments preserve the general balance that all humans need to be healthy. It depends on the three energies or doshas which control the activities of the body : Vata, Pitta and Kapha. The Vata dosha is the most important of the three doshas. In the classic Ayurveda books it is quoted that other doshas are lame without the help of vata. The elements combine with space and air in dominance to form what is Vata Dosha. It dominates the lower part of the body, which is below the umbilicus. represents regions of the intestines, lumbar, ears, bones and skin. Then comes the Pitta Dosha whith Fire and Water in dominence. The Pitta Dosha is responsible for the process of transformation or metabolism, for exemple when foods is being digested. Pitta is also responsible for metabolism in the organs and tissue systems as well as cellular regeneration.

Finally, it is the water and earth elements which join up to form the Kapha Dosha. Kapha is responsible for growth, and structure offering protection. When the three Doshas are well aligned and function in a balanced manner, it results in proper nourishment and well-being for the individual. But when there is imbalance or disharmony within or between them, it will result in disharmony, leading to various kinds of illness. The Ayurvedic concept of physical health revolves round these three Doshas and its primary purpose is to help maintain them in a balanced state and thus to prevent diseases.

Today’s lifestyle filled with stress and strain of this competitive world and new eating habits affects and challenges our health like never before. Our synthetic diet in place of a natural one exposes us to toxins resulting in disorders of metabolism. Ayurveda shows us a healthy way of leaving. India has great ayurvedic centres, especially in Kerala, which offer an all inclusive stay for regaining health and peace to visitors. For these treatment to be really effective, a minimum of number of days is required most of the time. So clients can experience a deep sence of rebirth in their body and spirit.

Ananda in Himalaya” is one of the most famous and beautiful ayuvedic hotel resort in India and it has been adapted few years ago in a tropical version by the luxury hotel resort “Shanti Ananda” located in Mauritius. Actually member of the Nira group, the hotel resort has changed its name to “Shanti Maurice“. Despite this change, Nira Spa has succeed to keep its precious original touch and keeps on offering top quality ayurvedic treatments. The extensive 75,000 sq foot Nira Spa, one of the largest in the Indian Ocean, is built like an enchanting tea pavilion, surrounded by native flower gardens.

Shanti Maurice, Nira Spa, Ocean Massage

Water dominates the atmosphere of Nira Spa with lacs that are decorative and which also help to relieve stress using beautiful plants and exotic fishes. Some of them are designed for therapeutic treatments like Watsu wich is a traditional Indain system of thalassotherapy. That treatment, undertaken by a watsu therapist, is a form of warm water bodywork which combines elements of massage, shiatsu and movement therapy in body temperature salt water. It symbolises rebirth. Stress and tension are washed away, pain is relieved and the body’s natural flexibility is renewed.

Just beside the ocean, the Nira Spa principal pool is one the most beautiful of Mauritius. It is formed by a pure rectangular shape which continues to the ocean and completed, on the opposite end, by an independent smaller pool which is made for balneotherapy treatments. In these surroundings where beauty dominates everything, the Nira Spa also has reached the same perfection. Treatment cards for clients are full of choices which are guaranteed by qualified Indian therapists. Nira Spa maintains same traditional spirit that is found in the best ayurvedic centres located in India.

Spa visits begin with a wellness consultation though which the body type and the current imbalances are detected after examining the physical, mental and emotion conditions. The client is also taught about Vadanta which is a selection of ancient principles of life and living. It enables one to achieve physical dynamism and mental balance directing the individual to the goal of spiritual enlightenment. Physicians then prepare a sequence of treatments and a programme of diet and exercises according to the body type that will help bring more balance, energy and peace to the entire being. Finding treatments which are rare except in ayuvedic centres located in India is a proof of the real commitment of Nira Spa.

So far clients can experience different kinds of treatments according the metabolism of different part of their bodys. The most remarkable ones are Shirodhara and Takradhara in which a liquid, either dosha oil or milk, is slowly poured trough a bronze metal contender on to the forehead of the individual lying on the special ayuvedic wooden table, named Droni. These treatments have beneficial effects on the cellular degeneration which is the first reason for total health and well being. They also heal insomnia, improve memory and in general fight against stress and others neurological disorders. Choornaswedana, also known as the “bundle massage”, is a kind of massage which aims to relieve muscles pains, rheumatism, or arthritis, improves blood circulation and speeds up elimination of toxins. Therapists begin with a general massage of the body using a dosha oil followed by taping rhythmically it which a warmed herbal poultices. Treatments Lepa, Tan Lepa or Musk Mepa are made to deep clean the body and accelerate the elimination of toxins. Following a medicated herbal oil massage, a dosha specific body mask is applied to the entire body, leaving it refreshed and relaxed. Tarpana and Kati are also very effective to treat sensitive area like tired eyes or painful lumbar. Therapists draw a circle made of wheat paste around the sore area and then fill it with liquid, either Ghee (clarified butter) to relieve the pressure of the eyes or warmed oil to heal the painful lumbar area. Exhaustion and pains are immediately soothed.

Treating cellulite problems, chronicle sinusitis, sore throats, or healing gastric problems are some of the other goals of the treatment offer of Nira Spa. In that way clients can really learn about ayuvedic care and philosophy.

Interview: Natasha Glover Webber

Natasha Glover Webber

Natasha Glover-Webber “Quality and personal satisfaction are what identify bespoke spas today”

Business woman in tourism area for many years, Natasha Webber, who used to work for the most famous hotels groups in Mauritius, is launching her own company in the world of luxury spas.

With Bespoke Ltd, Natasha Webber intends to represent the Italian brand Lemi, so well known for its excellent quality of goods and spa products, and also develops travel consultation and caring services directed for the most demanding travellers in the world.

Natasha agreed to have an enlightening chat with Valérie Aubert, correspondent of Finest-spa.com, she gave her information about her passion of wellness as a truly professional lady, and her opinion about luxury spa world in Mauritius.

VA: Concerning spa experiences and wellness activities, what do you enjoy the most ?

NGW: I am quite simple in my tast, I am more attracted to occidental types of massages which are generic in nature and give me a general feeling of relaxation. On the other hand I also appreciate more sophisticated treatments like hand and foot care which relieve my stress and fatigue. As a perfectionist, I think these parts of the body are just as important as the face and hair, because they reflect our femininity. Regarding a therapeutic focus I do prefer aromatherapy treatments which are so effective. Science of plants is amazing and great, and I have never found anything better to heal my backaches after a tough working day !

VA: What are your preferences from all the spa and beauty products ?

NGW: Concerning these areas, I am attracted to bio products made from natural ingredients like plants. Recently during my visit to professional showcases in Europe, I have discovered some very innovating brands. In my opinion I found this new products more effective for the skin than others from very famous marks that everybody knows. Of course it is quite difficult to get this products, especially in Mauritius, this is why I never forget to buy some when I travel aboard or ask my friends to get me some when they are travelling.

VA: You were born in Russia and have been living in Mauritius for 10 years now, what do you remember about your native culture ?

NGW: I came to Mauritius when I was very young, however I have a strong feeling of attachment to my country. My childhood was spent in Siberia which is beautiful and, like Mauritius, has some very rich cultural traditions. Nature is close to the activities and leisures of our people. Family piqueniques together on the river banks which are surrounded by trees are very popular, similar to our habit of regularly going to the sauna. There is a well known traditional massage which is called Banja, it is made by using the branches of the tree named Birch. People make brushes with the thin branches of this tree and then dip them into boiling water in order to get them fluffy. Then they put one of these brushes on the skin of your body with a light pressure which opens your pores. This treatment purifies and heals the body and it is one of mine most unforgettable memories of Russian tradition and culture.

VA: In general what is your philosophy concerning well being ?

NGW: I truly believe in balance and importance of nature in my life. I am not an obsessive person so I am not closed to different methods of wellness. I try to keep an open mind and simply enjoy what life gives me. Sharing and enjoying moments with my closes family and friends are just as important as my job. And it is this general balance which keeps me happy and beautiful. Spending quality time on the beach, listening to the ocean and feeling the caress of water on my skin bring me a deep well-being sensation and mental rebirth. Of course I do care about what I eat and I usually cook fresh vegetables that I only dress with olive oil for example. More over I treat myself with a delicate and gourmet meal, like a plate of cheese together with a glass of champagne, a great TV meal !

VA: In your point of view, what is the meaning of luxury in the spa world ?

NGW: For me luxury is a very important requirement and it should not represent outside wealth but on the contrary it should mean simple perfection. In the spa I would recommend treatment cards which could be developed to the personal needs of each client. Therefore time spent is important in luxury spa. Quality and personal satisfaction are what identify bespoke spas today. Each client has to be treated as a unique individual. Today some brands of spa products follow this trend, for example one of them has created a special oil massage which can be prepared before the treatment to suit the skin and personality of the client. Consequently the effect of this massage is more potent.

VA: As a professional woman in tourism and more recently in the spa world, what is your point of view about spa offers in Mauritius ?

NGW: I find the spa offers in Mauritius very good, and I especially appreciate natural surroundings where the spas are set most of the time. There is a sense of peace and tranquillity compared to the city spa which can hardly offer such a deep regenerative feeling, however they are designed in the best modern style. Mauritian therapists are also very efficient and I love their natural kindness and softness. But on the other hand, sometimes I have noticed that they lack some technical knowledge about other sophisticated massages because of their traditional training, compared to European therapists who have already got in their training system. I think balance should be found between the traditional massage practice and the developing of new trends. This becomes obvious when you visit international spa and wellness show cases. I truly thing that Mauritius spas surely will improve if they agree to use these modern techniques while keeping their own touch of authenticity.

VA: How do you think Mauritius spas should develop their marketing strategy ?

NGW: I think there are successful methods which apply to Mauritius spa world, in terms of infrastructure, products used and also marketing tools. The latest trend leads to the democratisation of spas with wider numbers of specials deals and spa packages. Consequently, luxury spas have to publicize what are latest and the best trends in spa world. Lemi, for which I am the exclusive representative in Mauritius, is a brand of materials and products which stands for this modern spirit. It offers new tools to improve comfort and visual attraction in spa materials. For example a steam cover, very light and easy to use, has been created for small scale spa which helps them to afford a steam treatment. More over mattresses, made of scare sacks filled with water and lighted from inside, intend to develop the aesthetic of the area and also improve chromatic treatments, so trendy today !

VA: In conclusion, can you give our Finest-spa readers your idea of the most glamorous place in Mauritius ?

NGW: I am fond of Saint Geran hotel, because of the general setting and the atmosphere. I especially love the soft white sandy beach and the exclusive services. As one of the oldest hotel in Mauritius, Saint Geran hotel has succeed to keep the traditional and the real touch of Mauritius, which in my mind goes along with the luxury life.

Health and wellness-focused travel represents hottest 2010 trends

Nira Spa - Shanti Maurice

A survey result that will give satisfaction to the Mauritius hotels resort and spas !

Despite a historically abysmal 2009 economy, this survey which has been conducted with 250 -plus global travel agents in July 2010 provides evidence on the steady upward growth of spa and health travels.

In fact improved results of this tourism sector for 2009 have developed better than others tourism sectors which work on a wider focus. Tow agents in three reported no declines in spa travel bookings, with 26% reporting spa travel actually increased, compared to 2008 !

The travel agents are very optimistic that bookings will continue to rise until the end of the year 2010. In fact 36% of agents report spa travel has increase in the first six months of 2010 and 39% claimed it has remained the same. Further more the majority, 52% of agents asked, report the economy recovery is now having a direct and positive impact on spa booking and the optimism for full-year 2010 is obvious with 61% of them predict overall growth this year.

Concerning the requirements of the travellers, latest trends reflect same interest in health and wellness-focused holidays. 88% of agents report their clients are showing a markedly increased interest in vacations with a dedicated health and wellness focus. Their interests are spa facilities packed with a diet program, fitness centres plus yoga sections.
Also for the fourth straight year, access to spa facilities rank the number one consideration for travellers followed by the proximity to a beach and sightseeing.

Concerning the reasons for booking spa travel, a new trend called “social spa-ing” is growing. It represents spas vacations booked by groups of people either from the same family, or friends, in order to celebrate special occasions like birthdays or weddings. This latest increased trend is just overtaking spa vacations for solo person and international spa travel. And it is probably this trend that will be more and more develop in the hotel resort and spa in the future.

This survey was designed to shed light on unfolding developments in the spa travel sector, including the health of market, pricing, consumer adoption and demographics, and popular locations and amenities in the spa tourism sector.

My experience at the Seven Colours Spa of Heritage Awali Resort: Relaxing, energy and philosophy !

Heritage Awali Golf & Spa Resort

The beginning of the day seems gorgeous, the sun is already up in the sky and the breeze is blowing softly against my skin. Dazzled by the charm of the countryside, I walk through the doors of the Heritage Awali Resort and Spa, being welcome by the taping of the drums and perfumed by spicy fragrance.

Immediately I am one with the surroundings : Heritage Awali pays homage to the rich african culture which has come here from generations past. Thick walls, warm reddish colours, cosy and solid furnitures, sculpted wooden panels and masks as wall decoration : I experience the warmed and the charm of this resort. Meanwhile I breath the fresh air coming in by the large open windows through which the beautiful view of the ocean. Immediately I fell at home in this comfortable lobby of Heritage Awali, especially with the african touch.

Here luxury does not follow international codes which are often cold and boring. On the contrary Heritage awali offers a wide range of facilities and interior designs which are easy and pleasant to use, with the great care of quality, and dedicated for visitors of all ages. Therefore the atmosphere around Heritage Awali is relaxing and gives everybody good feeling.
More over the three restaurants which are located around a central garden, kiosks on the beach offer exclusive intimacy for couples. Further more parents and children can enjoy happily the sloping hedges of one the pool which is in shape of the most famous bird of Mauritius, the Dodo. Then, behind the hotel, along a path hidden by a tropical garden rich and delicate, I walk to my goal : The Seven Colours Spa of Heritage Awali.

Heritage Awali Golf & Spa Resort

Similar to an african village made up of several huts, the Seven Colours Spa consists of dozen huts which are designed in an african style: Thatched roof, warm and soft coloured thick walls, solid wooden doors which are decorated by sculptured african panels, all these found in a exotic garden full of greenery.

As I go through the door of the reception hut, a hostess described me the principles of Seven Colours Spa. Born from the indian philosophy of seven chakras which represents the seven principal energetic points of our body, Helene Cassan, creator and manager of Seven Colours, has imagined an innovating concept which is based on combination between the seven principal colours of the light spectrum and the seven chakras of our body. So on, the intention is to give to each client a personal treatment in order to rebalance the seven energetic centres, or seven chakras, using, during the treatment, waves emitted by colours.

Therefore an experience at the Seven Colours Spa is like feeling different levels of sensations. After a consultation with a spa hostess, when, through a questionnaire, we detect the actual energetic level of my chakras, one colour is attributed to me. Today my colour is green, symbol of general balance !

Then, after changing my clothes in a luxurious cloakroom, I am guided by my therapist to the treatment room, which has been previously prepared according to my profile. Illuminated by soft lights, the room is large and simply decorated in order not to disturb serenity of spirit.

Heritage Awali Golf & Spa Resort

A soft green light is directed to the massage table, coming from therapeutic spots lights Through different minute details, like a candle or some small stones in a bowl, I recognize my colour which is green. Further more my therapist tells me that perfumed water which is in line with my profile, has been spayed in the room before my arrival.

Lying down on the padded massage table, I am covered by warm soft sheets. The therapist shows me the special oils for my massage which manufactured according to mixed formula which will help to balance my chakras. Treatment can beguine now. The “signature massage” that I experience today is a mix between different types of massage knowledges. One part from traditional culture like “palper et rouler” and for an other part from technique massage based on pressures and stretching. All through the treatment as my muscles beguine to warm up and my spirit slowly floats away. Does the colour play a part in this experience of deep relaxation ? I can not be certain, but the care that has been given to my psychic balance provides me a general feeling of well-being which is obviously a major plus point.

However both my body and my spirit have been energised through this experience because they can not exist separately.
After nearly one and half hour of treatment when my muscles have been worked out, I wake up. The massage I received has been deep and useful. I return to the bright light of the midday and come to relax on soft padded lounger near the pool, under a kiosk.

In all spa experiences, this moment when we are near calm and awake, is one the best moment of life. Surroundings play a big part. Today in this green refreshed garden which decorate the Seven Colours Spa of Heritage Awali Resort, I look at the magnificent garden and can feel a deep sense of serenity with stronger energy. Seven Colours Spa of Heritage Awali has accomplished its intention :

Giving rebirth to my energy balance of my chakras. Energy and Philosophy !
Consequently Seven Colours Spa, with its aim to offer quality services, has reached the top level of spa, and thanks to its creativity and its philosophy, it has touched my senses.

Paradis Golf Club
Unforgettable is the only word to describe a round of golf on the course at Paradis where the fairways and greens curl along the shoreline of a spectacular bay against a backdrop of majestic mountains. The claim that this is one of the most beautiful golf courses in Mauritius is a valid one. Built within the resort’s grounds, the 18-hole Par 72 golf course stretches along 5,924 metres between the iconic Morne Mountain and the crystal-clear lagoon of the Morne Peninsula. Much of the creative design of some bunkers and fairways is attributable to international golf legend Tony Johnstone who has spent some years playing the course through its many evolutionary stages.
